What Is CBT?

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a highly researched psychological therapy that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. CBT is recommended by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) as the preferred treatment for Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic with or without Agoraphobia, Generalised Anxiety and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

CBT is an umbrella term for a number of therapies that all use techniques to change how we think and behave. Cognitive Therapy is based on the idea that it is not what happens to us in life but how we think about these things that then affects how we feel. Behavioural Therapy is based on the idea that avoidance of things we perceive to be unpleasant or scary prevents us from learning that we would feel better if we eventually faced them. CBT Therapists often use a combination of both cognitive and behavioural methods to help people make changes to their lives and begin to feel better.
